If you've been for an energetic stroll across the countryside, or spent an hour in the garden, you may feel the need to have an extra shower, in addition to your morning wash. Simply because it's pleasant to feel clean and fresh after working up a little perspiration.
But maybe this isn't the best thing to do. According to new scientific research, it may be more beneficial for our health to wash less and enjoy our natural aromas more.
IFLScience reports that too much showering rubs off the natural, essential oils in our skin and hairanddamages the balance of microbes that live on your skin, according to research.
Over-scrubbing can be harmful to the microbiome - the layer of natural bacteria, viruses and other microbes that live in and on our bodies. The microbiome is vital in making our immune system, digestion, and other bodily functions work efficiently. Therefore, removing this useful layer through over-showering could be be harmful to the effectiveness of our bodies. However, the full extent of the importance has not been extensively researched.

In support of this theory, a study of people living in the remote Amazonian village of Yanomami, who had no recorded contact with western civilisation and did not wash regularly, found that "their skin, mouths, and faeces hosted the richest complement of bacteria in any human population examined until that point.
"All those dots in a row sure look like an arrow pointing toward the conclusion that showering too often is a bad idea for your health."
In conclusion, shampoo, soap and cleaning chemicals can disrupt the healthy balance of our microbiome. This is exacerbated for those who mainly live an indoor, sterilised lifestyle - their microbiomes are less exposed to the natural elements and therefore are less complex and robust.
This theory is by no means suggesting that we cut out all personal hygiene. It simply implies that we should shower when necessary and not overdo it.
This bodes well for those of us who love the outdoors and countryside - our microbiomes may be more robust thanks to us embracing mother nature. Would you be ready to wear your natural odours and cut out some of those showers?
